In the NewsPost Star: Gillibrand: Middle-class tax cuts are a prioritySubmitted by Phil Giltner on April 23, 2006 - 6:41pm.
By MAURY THOMPSON [email protected]: <mailto:[email protected]> Published on 4/19/2006 Local News THE POST-STAR Middle class families are being hit with a "hidden tax" that was intended as a way to close tax loopholes for the wealthy, Democratic congressional candidate Kirsten Gillibrand said Tuesday. Gillibrand called for adjusting the parameters for the federal Alternative Minimum Tax to account for inflation. Initiated in the early 1970s, the Alternative Minimum Tax was intended to make sure the wealthy paid at least some federal income tax, she said. Because income levels in general have risen to keep pace with inflation, more and more middle class families with children are now required to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax, Gillibrand said in a telephone interview after she announced her proposal at a press conference in Albany. "I am very concerned that we make an adjustment, and we need to do it right away," she said. Unless current parameters are changed, half of all households in the New York will be subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax within five years, she said. Gillibrand is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park. Gillibrand must not be aware that Sweeney has already supported legislation addressing the Alternative Minimum Tax issue, said his spokeswoman Melissa Carlson. That overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives in December, and he now is attempting to attach stand-alone legislation to a package of tax bills now being considered by a joint House and Senate conference committee, she said. "This is yet another example of her lack of understanding of the legislative process ...," Carlson said. "Sweeney already knows that New York ranks second in the nation in taxpayers affected by this crushing, unfair tax and he has a record of working to address it." Gillibrand merely stated she would make middle class tax cuts a priority, and was not directly criticizing Sweeney, said her campaign chairman, Bill Hyers. "They're (Republicans) egos are getting a little out of control here if they think every press conference has to be about them," he said. The Sap is Running - And so is Kirsten Gillibrand, Democratic candidate for the 20th Congressional District, who came to Shaver-Hill Farm this weekend from her home in Hudson so her little boy, Theo, could get a taste of Maple Days.
Gillibrand announced her campaign at Shaver-Hill last month for the seat currently held by Rep. John Sweeney. She took time between wagon rides to listen to the concerns and ideas of local voters and to chat with Delaware County Democratic Committee Chair Bill Buccheri, who said, "It was great to see Kirsten and her family in Delaware County at a non-political event. She has shown a real interest in Delaware County and the surrounding counties- we have a chance to have real representation in the 20th Congressional District." "We need fiscal discipline," she said. Gillibrand, who is running against U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, said that if she is elected, she will not vote for or accept a pay raise while in Congress, especially while the country has a massive budget deficit. "We have many other priorities," she said. "We Should be focused on getting tax cuts for working-class families." By Stuart Rothenberg March 20, 2006 Looking for a sign of whether a big Democratic wave is developing? Try New York. Once a state with genuine political competitiveness where liberal Republicans (including Thomas Dewey, Jacob Javits, Nelson Rockefeller and Ken Keating) prospered, the Empire State has veered toward the Democrats over the past few decades. Yes, New York Republicans have now held the governorship for three consecutive terms, and they retain their longtime lock on the state Senate. But Democrats hold more than a 2-to-1 advantage in the state’s Congressional delegation as well as both Senate seats and an unassailable majority in the state Assembly. And, of course, no Republican presidential nominee has carried the state since Ronald Reagan’s re-election landslide of 1984.

The Post Star, Published on 2/19/2006 By MARK MAHONEY NOTE: This article is an unedited version (DOWNLOAD PAGE ONE OF THE ARTICLE HERE - PDF) (DOWNLOAD PAGE TWO OF THE ARTICLE HERE - PDF) Kirsten Gillibrand is no doubt aware of the political carnage left in Congressman John Sweeney's wake. Doris Kelly. Frank Stoppenbach. Morris Guller. Margaret Lewis. Kenneth McCallion. Jean Bordewich. Go back even further, to the long list of sacrificial lambs slaughtered at the Election Day altar of Sweeney's predecessor, the late Gerald Solomon, and it might be enough to scare off even the bravest of politicians. But Gillibrand -- a 39-year-old lawyer from Columbia County who has never held political office -- seems to have no qualms about stepping into battle against the four-term incumbent, one who represents a district in which Republicans regularly take about 65 percent of the vote against their November challengers. Already well-funded and off to an unusually strong start for a Democrat in this district, Gillibrand got the first big front-page headlines of her fledgling campaign by calling out the congressman for his ski weekend in Utah with a group of lobbyists. "I am running this campaign to earn your trust and to help repair that foundation." Times Union Editorial: Skiing for dollars Rep. John Sweeney's fundraising practices unusual for someone who wants to clean up Congress Just two weeks ago, Rep. John Sweeney was among a stampede of congressmen, Republicans and Democrats alike, who couldn't get rid of their otherwise zealously collected campaign contributions fast enough. Any money connected, in any way, to lobbyist-turned-felon Jack Abramoff or any of his evermore suspicious associates wasn't worth keeping. It instead went to charity -- $2,000 to St. Jude's Research Hospital, in Mr. Sweeney's case. Fred LeBrun in the Times Union: Sweeney fell short on this one First published: Sunday, January 22, 2006 You'd think after all the grief Republican Congressman John Sweeney has taken for holding a fat fundraiser at the home of a lobbyist out in Utah that there'd be at least a hint of recognition that this was reasonably dumb. Especially because Sweeney has become the poster child for reforming the way his majority caucus does business in the House in light of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. Raises over $370,000 in First Four Months January, 10, 2006 Hudson, N.Y. - Kirsten Gillibrand, candidate running for U.S. House in the 20th Congressional District, has had a remarkable fundraising start. Gillibrand has raised $249,035 in last three months, bringing the four-month fundraising total of the campaign up to $370,680. This amount is more than any Democrat has ever raised for an entire campaign cycle for the 20th Congressional District. For Federal Election Commission purposes, December 31st marks the end of the fourth quarter. "I am very, very pleased with the response the campaign has received so far. The people of this district and across the state are hungry for new leadership and have a true desire for change. I look forward to this race ahead, and together we bring new ideas, a fresh perspective, and a real change in representation the people in this district are asking for," said Gillibrand.
